That choice can sometimes be between natural diamonds, which originate in the earth, and lab-grown diamonds, a man-made product which are sometimes called “laboratory-grown”, “cultured”, “cultivated”, “man-made”, “synthetic”, “simulated”, or “lab created” diamonds.
Although grown by scientists instead of created in the earth’s crust, lab diamonds are absolutely real diamonds—they display the same chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds.
Even expert gemologists can’t tell the difference with the naked eye, If we compare the physical and chemical properties of lab-grown and mined diamonds, it’s obvious lab-grown diamonds are, in fact, the real deal. Are lab created diamonds real?
Yes! Lab created diamonds are real diamonds, identical in every way (but the price!) to mined diamonds. Not to be confused with cubic zirconia, moissanite, or a "look-a-like" diamond, lab grown diamonds are 100% pure crystallized carbon. Think of it as making ice in your modern-day freezer versus getting it from a glacier; both are frozen H2O regardless of the origin. We are crystalizing carbon into stunning rough diamonds that are then cut, polished and graded just like earth mined diamonds. Lab created carry the same optical, physical and chemical properties. They have the same refractive index, dispersion, and hardness, and are graded to the same standards as mined diamonds by leading independent gemological institutes.

Although their chemical structure is the same as a natural diamond, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) a lab-created diamond cannot be called “real” because it does not come from the Earth and it is not a gemstone. Although lab-grown diamonds cost a lot more than diamond simulants, they may not hold their value like natural diamonds do.
Laboratory-grown diamonds don’t have enough of a track record to determine what consumers are willing to consistently pay for them. There isn’t a secondary market yet for lab-grown diamonds since there is so much uncertainty about them holding value.

How are lab grown diamonds created?
Grown diamonds are made one of two ways - either through High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT), or through Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).
High Pressure High Temperature or HPHT
When the HPHT method is used, a small diamond seed is placed into a piece of carbon. Then using either a belt press, cubic press or a split-sphere (BARS) press, the carbon is pressurized to approximately 1.5 million pounds per square inch.
Chemical Vapor Deposition or CVD
Like HPHT, CVD uses a small diamond seed (often an HPHT diamond). This seed is placed inside a sealed chamber that is heated to over 1,400 Fahrenheit and filled with carbon-rich gases (typically methane and hydrogen). These gases are then ionized into plasma using a technology similar to lasers or microwaves.
