• Natural diamonds were formed on average around 100 miles below the earth’s surface from 1 to 3 billion years ago, they are older than life on Earth.

Lab Grown Diamonds

• Lab grown diamonds are manufactured in a controlled laboratory environment, often produced in just a matter of weeks. Lab diamonds are grown by recreating the same conditions of nature, lab grown diamonds have the same variation of color and clarity (the 4 C’ s) that exist in natural diamonds.

• No mining required, therefore there is no soil movement.

• Lab grown diamonds are produced in factories in approximately 2-3 weeks using one of two methods HPHT and CVD.

• Lab Grown Diamonds are manufactured to a repeatable order. This means they don’t have the unique genuine natural qualities of precious natural diamonds.

• Synthetic diamonds do not contain nitrogen. This is a tiny chemical difference between the two.

• Lab Diamonds are as strong and as hard as natural diamonds, both scoring a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Are lab created diamonds real?

Yes! Lab created diamonds are real diamonds, identical in every way (but the price!) to mined diamonds. Not to be confused with cubic zirconia, moissanite, or a "look-a-like" diamond, lab grown diamonds are 100% pure crystallized carbon. Think of it as making ice in your modern-day freezer versus getting it from a glacier; both are frozen H2O regardless of the origin. We are crystalizing carbon into stunning rough diamonds that are then cut, polished and graded just like earth mined diamonds. Lab created carry the same optical, physical and chemical properties. They have the same refractive index, dispersion, and hardness, and are graded to the same standards as mined diamonds by leading independent gemological institutes.

Although their chemical structure is the same as a natural diamond, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) a lab-created diamond cannot be called “real” because it does not come from the Earth and it is not a gemstone. Although lab-grown diamonds cost a lot more than diamond simulants, they may not hold their value like natural diamonds do.

Laboratory-grown diamonds don’t have enough of a track record to determine what consumers are willing to consistently pay for them. There isn’t a secondary market yet for lab-grown diamonds since there is so much uncertainty about them holding value.

It's likely that laboratory-grown diamond production will continue to get cheaper and cheaper as competition grows, forcing producers to keep lowering their sales price for these stones.

How are lab grown diamonds created?

Grown diamonds are made one of two ways - either through High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT), or through Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

High Pressure High Temperature or HPHT

When the HPHT method is used, a small diamond seed is placed into a piece of carbon. Then using either a belt press, cubic press or a split-sphere (BARS) press, the carbon is pressurized to approximately 1.5 million pounds per square inch.

Chemical Vapor Deposition or CVD

Like HPHT, CVD uses a small diamond seed (often an HPHT diamond). This seed is placed inside a sealed chamber that is heated to over 1,400 Fahrenheit and filled with carbon-rich gases (typically methane and hydrogen). These gases are then ionized into plasma using a technology similar to lasers or microwaves.
